North Cape
- Posted by Rob (#1) on July 31, 2006 01:06 CEST
After a deliberate detour through Eastern Europe and Russia, mate Pimmez and million dollar camper Betsy have reached the North Cape, according to a nice text message I received earlier tonight. I wonder if the stickers on her are still intact. And whether the camper is completely covered in them by now.. safe trip back home, lads. And say hi to Copenhagen for me!

Jani Taskinen Wrap-up
- Posted by Rob (#1) on July 31, 2006 02:15 CEST
The Baheyeldin Dynasty has a nice wrap up of Jani Taskinen's departure from PHP over Israel, although not providing much more new information than my initial reaction.
It does however offer some open source and geopolitics musings, including Herbert Xu's Debian departure over the Taiwanese flag. Another good example, although not noted, would be over anti-Americanism. I maintain that Jani's case is the most interesting because he's also known for his UN peacekeeping activies, although so far the repercussions of the drama appear limited to the open source community.

Peace in Uganda?
- Posted by Rob (#1) on July 31, 2006 03:13 CEST
There is hope for peace in Uganda yet:
The deputy leader of Uganda's rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), Vincent Otti, has attended peace talks in a clearing on the DR Congo-Sudan border.
Glad to hear it. It's always good to hear when a country is on its way to make an end to bloodshed. Especially when I'm due to be there for work in a number of weeks. (Don't worry, the fighting doesn't take place in capital Kampala.)

Sony Ericsson K800i
- Posted by Rob (#1) on July 31, 2006 03:22 CEST
(Note to self: rename Software category to Technology some day.)
I want the Sony Ericsson K800i. I'm extremely happy with my K750i but this new model has a bigger screen, better camera (3.2 megapixels!) and appears to fix my biggest annoyance: the joystick looks more robust and seems less prone to break down after extensive use. The phone also has tri-band support (so I could use it in the US next summer), UMTS and Bluetooth Stereo (finally, MP3s through a Bluetooth headset, I miss that so much in my current phone).
Unfortunately my KPN subscriptions lasts a while longer, so I'll have to keep using my K750i for a while. On the good side, by the time I have to renew I expect the first 5 megapixel camera phones.. maybe even with Ogg Vorbis support.

Letter meme
- Posted by Rob (#1) on July 31, 2006 07:57 CEST
This is a meme I saw at Inge's LJ some time ago. How it works:
Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter in your journal, including an explanation what the word means to you and why, and than pass out letters to those who want to play along.
Inge threw an E at me. Quite a tough letter, so it took me a while. Here we go:
- Eindhoven. I studied there and the city hosts my favourite football team PSV Eindhoven. And let's not forget Eindhoven is close to Veldhoven, where Inge lives!
- Epitaph. Home to The Offspring, Heideroosjes and HorrorPops, to name but a few of my favourite bands on this wonderful label.
- England. Sort of my second home, or at least London definitely feels like it.
- English. Not quite the same as England, but I like the Anglosphere and feel quite comfortable communicating in English. (Six more words, damnit!)
- Ezri Dax. I have a geeky side (I am engineer after all) and openly fancy Ezri Dax, fictional character from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one of my favourite television shows.
-
Eveline. My sister. :-) Note to Inge: no, I'm not referring to Eef as my sister-in-law.. Feline's my step. Soz.
- Engineering. Hey, engineering. Glad I mentioned being an engineer earlier, I'm seriously running out of steam here. Well, my job description says software engineer. So engineering seems to be be meaningful to me!
-
European Union. I'm not always too happy with the bureaucratic bunch in Brussels, but I am considered a citizen of it.
-
Eliza Dushku. Hot women never bore me, so I suppose I'd better mention a celebrity whose name begins with an E.. and I think that out of those Eliza is the hottest and not just because you can play some Tetris with her, but because Faith was cool.
-
Emmaus College. First high school I attended (we moved so I had the pleasure of experiencing two different ones).
I made it! Thanks Ig, but next time please throw me a freaking Q or Z because I'd probably be finished sooner.. this took me how many weeks? Too many.
As the meme said, drop a comment if you want to play along and I'll assign you a very nice letter. Most likely the ß, ø or š for anyone who's going to be mean about the fact that I used to be a Trekkie. ;-)

DKNWZ, Dutch 9/11 political party
- Posted by Rob (#1) on July 31, 2006 21:23 CEST
It's summertime and the loonies are active again, at least they are in Holland: action group Dit Kan Niet Waar Zijn (DKNWZ, this cannot be true) is going to run in the elections later this year and promises to re-open the American 9/11 investigation.
Good luck. One of the first laws the party plans to introduce is rumoured to be one where airplanes slamming into concrete leave a cartoon-like shape in the building, so future generations will not consider their paranoid delusions to be somewhat reasonable. Lunacy.
